If you are using, or might want to use, a pattern that you already own, and you are going shopping for wool, then TAKE THE PATTERN WITH YOU. The lovely people at your wool shop will be able to advise you what wool to use, and how much you need a LOT easier if they see the actual pattern. That way no one is disappointed with the results
Try to buy an extra ball of wool when you start a project. It only takes one mistake, a decision to make a garment 2 rows longer, or even tension differences, to end up short at the end of your project. That odd ball will always come in use later on for another project if it isn't used and will save endless heartbreak even if it doesn't save a few dollars.
If you do decide to use a yarn other than one that is named in the pattern that you use, ALWAYS check the yardage on the ball bands of both wools. There WILL be a difference. It may be in your favour!
