About Yarns

It is important to remember that where ever possible to use the yarn recommended in the pattern that you choose.
However because this is not always possible try to match a yarn by its suggested tension, which you will find on the ball band. Find one that has the closest match in tension and in look to match as closely as possible the garment's look. This is simpler to do with common types of yarn, ie different kinds of standard DK yarns will often give the same finish.
There are exceptions to this, and they are generally found in novelty yarns, synthetics, and "fluffies". One thing that has to be considered every time is the yardage of different yarns. Every yarn will have a different meterage, regardless of the weight of the ball. This is also printed on the ball band, so check carefully.
